Spouses of Kidney Patients (Pre- & Post-Transplant)

Spouses of Kidney Patients (Pre- & Post-Transplant)

This is a group for people with spouses that have chronic kidney disease and are either on dialysis or have had a transplant. It can be very difficult and isolating to be a caregiver/support person for an ill partner and sometimes it's hard to remember that caregivers need support too! Hopefully spouses will be able to come to this group to connect with others that understand what they are going through and find comfort in the fact that they are not alone in their struggles.

My Story

I'm 34 years old and my husband has IGA Nephropathy. He was diagnosed at age 16 and went into kidney failure at age 24. He received a kidney from his father after undergoing peritoneal dialysis (which didn't work for him) and hemodialysis for 8 months. It has now been 10 years since the transplant and the kidney is working fine but he has developed other chronic issues over the years, such as lung sensitivity/wheezing (from a flu that landed him in the hospital for a week) and venostasis in his legs (which we suspect is from hemodialysis but the doctors can't explain it). He also gets really depressed every year around the transplant anniversary. He will need another transplant eventually, we just have no idea when. The waiting and not knowing what our future holds for us is really hard. We have two young boys together now so I try to focus on raising them and I figure the rest will just happen as it's meant to.
